After lunch. the group toured the old site of
Colligan at the intersection of Swan Mountain road and Highway 6. Next, we visited the old Keystone depot,
still in its original location and from there, visited Dickey, which normally is underwater at the Dillon
reservoir but the water level was down, enabling us to see many of the railroad structure foundations.
Thursday night, the evening program consisted of dinner and a Frisco Historic Park & Museum presentation as
well as a Breckenridge Heritage Alliance presentation.
Friday morning the group began the “Ten Mile Tour” beginning at the site of the
Frisco Depot and as we moved up Ten Mile Creek, we stopped at a sites overlooking Kokomo and Robinson.
A box lunch was enjoyed atop Fremont Pass at the Climax Molybdenum mine where many interpretive displays
tell the history of the mining and railroad activity there. Heading back down the hill towards Frisco the
group stopped to view the remains of a D&RG trestle close to the C&S grade and another stop to view
the construction camp remains at Officer’s Gulch. Friday evening, back at the ranch/Holiday Inn, the evening
program saw another great dinner and a “Year in Review” presentation which covered the Society’
accomplishments over the last 12 months.
Saturday was “on your own” as members visited the Breckenridge Railroad Park Museum
and then drove the old grade over Boreas Pass to Como. Pancakes were once again served in the section house
atop Boreas Pass. In Como, Boreas Pass Railroad Day dawned cold and windy but calmed down and warmed
up as the day progressed. A running gear problem was discovered on “Klondike Kate” the night before
so running her was very limited. She sat hot on the turntable blowing her whistle and was
“spun” on the turntable by delighted children all day long. Speeder and handcar rides were
given and the depot and roundhouse were open to the public. The highlight of the day was a wonderful
concert in the roundhouse by the Denver Brass, accompanied by the Celtic Colorado Bagpipers!
AND, they will be back in 2019!
