DSP&P Historical Society 2003 Convention - Leadville, CO

Leadville is well known for intimidating weather, and it lived up to its reputation when the DSP&PHS met for its fifth annual convention in 2003.  Our first day’s event, a hike along the right-of-way of the Leadville Mineral Belt, was virtually rained out.  Some members walked the grade in a downpour, others elected to tour the National Mining Museum and Hall of Fame.  The sky cleared Saturday, in time for us to take a ride on the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad.  It was still chilly, but nobody seemed to mind.  Business meetings and model displays were held at the Leadville Elks Club, whose members were friendly hosts.  We decided to hold the 2004 event in Bailey and explore the Platte Canyon area.

Many of the group got off the train at the water tank stop to take pictures and converse with good friends.

The old C&S freight house was still in existence in Leadville in 2003 and made a nice photo opportunity as the LC&S train passed.

The water tank was a fine gathering spot for members.

The view from the LC&S is breathtaking.  Early fall was definitely in the air during this August weekend.
